Design and operating principle
All NTE roller thrust bearings feature a standardized base architecture in accordance with ISO requirements and consist of the following components:
- Fixed ring – fixed on the shaft and absorbs axial loads.
- Loose ring (one or two, depending on load direction) – has clearance between its inner diameter and the shaft and transfers axial load to the housing.
- Steel or brass cage – ensures smooth rolling. Steel cages are typically window-type, while brass cages are machined and comb-shaped.
- Cylindrical or tapered rollers – in tapered designs, the roller generatrices intersect at a single point on the bearing axis, minimizing sliding during rotation.
All parts are installed separately during assembly, allowing the condition of the bearing to be monitored, wear to be checked, and defects to be detected before an emergency stop.

Roller thrust bearings types

A spherical raceway on the housing washer allows the bearing to self-align and compensate for misalignment of 1–3°. The rollers feature a specially designed asymmetric profile that reduces edge stresses and ensures uniform load distribution.
The cage, usually made of brass, holds the rollers in the correct position, ensuring their even distribution around the inner ring. This reduces friction between the rolling elements.
However, it should be noted that thrust roller bearings are primarily designed to withstand only axial loads. Their speed is low. Therefore, for high axial loads and higher rotation speeds, it is better to use tapered roller bearings.
